Image The Proposition, a new film written by Nick Cave, will premiere in New York City May 5. The film, directed by John Hillcoat, features a superstar cast including Guy Pearce, John Hurt, Ray Winstone, Emily Watson and Danny Huston.

Nick Cave was originally set to write just the music for the film but he became involved in the script writing at the suggestion od John Hillcoat.

"I didn't feel I had much understanding of dialogue. I knew I coul work out a story well enough, I'm basicaly a narrative kind of songwriter, telling stories is what I do. But I thinh I would have problems with the dialogue. Once I sat down and started though it felt really good and I very much enjoyed the process of writing it and telling the story."

"I wanted to write a cohesive but mythical story that moved forward and was simple and affecting, as well as highly emotionaly charged. The fact that it was a western set in Australia was very much secondary. I was primarily interested in the interplay between characters in the most general sense."

PLOT: Rural Australia in the late nineteenth century: Capt. Stanley and his men capture two of the four Burns brothers, Charlie and Mike. Their gang is held responsible for attacking the Hopkins farm, raping pregnant Mrs. Hopkins and murdering the whole family. Arthur Burns, the eldest brother and the gang's mastermind, remains at large has and has retreated to a mountain hideout. Capt. Stanley's proposition to Charlie is to gain pardon and - more importantly - save his beloved younger brother Mike from the gallows by finding and killing Arthur within nine days.
