Nick Cave to Publish Music from Vesturport’s Pieces

Wednesday, 15 April 2009

ImageIcelandic theater group Vesturport has reached an agreement with Australian singer-songwriter Nick Cave and his band, The Bad Seeds, on recording and publishing the music from three of the group’s plays. Two of the pieces have already been staged, “The Metamorphosis” by Franz Kafka and “Woyzech” by Georg Büchner, to which Cave wrote the music, Morgunbladid reports.

The third, “Faust” by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, is scheduled to premiere in Iceland next fall and afterwards tour the world. Cave will also write the music to that play, which will be some sort of a rock opera, and participate in the dramatization of the play along with the director, Gísli Örn Gardarsson.

“We’re going to make a brand new ‘Faust’ only based on the legend of the man who sold his soul to the devil,” Gardarsson said, explaining that the play will only be loosely based on Goethe’s work. Cave and The Bad Seeds plan to release the music to all three pieces at once, but it is not yet clear when it will appear on the market.

Ed Kuepper is new Bad Seed
Written by slade

ImageHaving lit up ATP Australia with his iconic bands The Saints and The Laughing Clowns, Ed Kuepper has joined Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds. The revered guitarist takes the spot of Mick Harvey, who recently departed the band after 25 years. Kuepper will be inducted into his new fraternity with a world tour in late-2009.

In the meantime, he’ll appear at the Melbourne International Jazz Festival, as well as playing two intimate soirees with The Laughing Clowns. It’s fair to say Mick Harvey won’t be losing sleep over this replacement.

Mick Harvey quits Bad Seeds

ImageMulti-instrumentalist Mick Harvey, a founding member of Nick Cave And The Bad Seeds, has left the band.

Harvey, who had been a member of the band since it formed in 1983, said he was leaving for "personal and professional" reasons. He said he would continue to work on the band's reissue projects.

In a statement he said, "For a variety of personal and professional reasons I have chosen to discontinue my ongoing involvement with Nick Cave And The Bad Seeds.

"After 25 years I feel I am leaving the band as it experiences one of its many peaks; in very healthy condition, and with fantastic prospects for the future.

"I'm confident Nick will continue to be a creative force and that this is the right time to pass on my artistic and managerial role to what has become a tremendous group of people who can support him in his endeavours both musically and organizationally.

"It was a fantastic experience to finish my touring days in the band with the recent shows in Australia and the unique events that took place in conjunction with All Tomorrow's Parties, especially Mt. Buller, which was one of the many highlights of my involvement with the band throughout the years.

"I shall continue working on the Bad Seeds back catalogue reissues project over the coming year and look forward to the new opportunities I shall be able to accommodate as a result of my changed circumstances."  [NME]
